In his role as Director of Sales and Marketing, Patterson will still establish new client relationships and work as an account manager, and is also in charge of marketing, advertising and promotion for Progressive. He will oversee publicity outreach initiatives, like newsletter publications and seminars, continue his active role in community and trade organizations, and seek more speaking opportunities like this recent roles as a panelist at the ChannelPro SMB Forum in New Jersey and panel moderator at the New York Expo and Business Conference in Manhattan. Robb Patterson is a leading technology consultant and advisor to businesses and community organizations, as well as a sought after speaker and writer, in the New York Metro Area. He began his career as a freelance web designer, and then became a system administrator for a 40-use not-for-profit organization where he developed and managed the logistics department in addition to their computer network.

In 2005, he founded the New York Small Business Server Group (NYSBS), which has grown into one of the largest SMB-focused technology peer groups in the world. With Patterson leading the way as its acting president, NYSBS’ 280+ members share industry best practices, collaborate to solve challenges, educate one another, and benefit from positive relationships with leading hardware and software vendors.

An active member of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce, Patterson serves as Co-Chair of its Tech Committee, developing and supporting technology-related events, and its Mid-Market Committee, which will build the Chamber’s mid-size business membership. Since 2010, he has been on the steering committee for the New York Business Expo & Conference, an annual event that features 200 exhibitors and 40 seminars, and attracts more than 10,000 executives.

“Robb has been a critical part of our team since he joined PCI, managing our relationships and helping us grow our business in Manhattan,” said Progressive Computing CEO Robert Cioffi. “He’s always taken an active role in marketing and been very participative in community initiatives, so this promotion is not only well deserved but a logical extension of his natural talents.”

6 Short-Term Goals for Long-Term Success

Posted on January 20, 2014 by Anthony Smith

Small businesses can create big success if they consistently set short-term, attainable goals. Whether your business is looking to expand into a new market, acquire new leads or make key new hires, these short-term goals will help you sustain momentum over the long term.

1. Make sales and marketing a priority.

Clearly, sales and marketing are key to success, but many small business owners don’t have expertise in these areas. Evaluate a few of the free or inexpensive cloud-based applications that can help you optimize for search engines and improve PPC campaign results, increase lead generation or make it easy to launch and maintain marketing campaigns. By getting a bit of help with these sales and marketing activities, you can increase market awareness about your product and allow your team to dedicate more time to improving it.

NYCEDC Announces RISE : NYC

$
0
0
This week NYCEDC announced RISE : NYC, Resiliency Innovations for a Stronger Economy, a competition to identify and deploy new technologies to help small businesses become more resilient to future storms, sea level rise and other effects of climate change.

Hurricane Sandy revealed significant vulnerabilities in New York City’s buildings and infrastructure networks. The storm displaced entire communities, stalled business activity and shut down critical utility networks for days. Businesses in the city’s affected areas experienced not only physical damage to their buildings, but lost significant amounts of inventory and business-critical equipment. After the storm, many impacted businesses exhausted their resources while making the most basic repairs to get back to work. Unfortunately, not having the means to invest in resiliency measures, they remain vulnerable to future storms and other extreme weather events.

Through RISE : NYC, up to $30 million is available to fund the installation of new and innovative resiliency technologies at small businesses impacted by Hurricane Sandy to enable them to better prepare for future storms. The competition is funded by the Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program administered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The competition seeks applications from a wide variety of businesses and organizations with innovative and scalable resiliency projects that will benefit small businesses by making their building systems, energy infrastructure and telecommunication networks better able to resist, adapt to, or bounce back from extreme weather events. RISE : NYC is also seeking project sites. Small businesses that suffered physical damage, were located in the inundation area, sustained a loss of power or utility connection, or are located in the revised 100-year floodplain can participate with an opportunity to receive a selected technology at no cost.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Visit the RISE : NYC website for more information and to find out how to apply.

SHARE THE OPPORTUNITY
Please share this funding opportunity with small businesses and technology providers in your community. If you have any questions or need additional information please reach out to info@rise-nyc.com or visit the RISE : NYC website.

MCC Guest Blogger: Football Fans are Getting Iced, but not how you think

$

By the Global Intellectual Property Center

West-coasters pilgrimaging to the Super Bowl this year may be left super cold. While acclimating to polar temperatures for hours in an outdoor stadium in New Jersey is bad enough, opportunistic counterfeiters are seeking to make it worse.

Knock-off memorabilia and apparel are destined to leave a chill on sports fans of all kinds. But you’re saying to yourself, what gives? A Bronco’s jersey is a jersey and a Seahawk’s sweatshirt is just a sweatshirt. That may be the case… unless it’s fake. Counterfeits, clothing included, are oftentimes made of inferior quality, making what appears to be a warm coat, mittens, etc to in fact be totally useless against the cold.

But 400,000 Super Bowl attendees and consumers aren’t the only ones getting iced. Businesses and local economies suffer from this growing epidemic, as evidenced by this week’s $20 million bust on game day fakes. In “Operation Team Player,” U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement teamed with the NFL to identify and prevent the profiteering from counterfeit merchandise and tickets from a variety of sources, like warehouses, flea markets, and online vendors.

David Hirschmann, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber's Global Intellectual Property Center was cited as saying: "Counterfeit goods cost the global economy an estimated $250 billion each year. More than 1.2 million jobs in New Jersey, 900,000 jobs in Colorado and 1.2 million in the state of Washington depend on IP intensive industries meaning counterfeits have a direct impact on the economy in the home states of both teams and the host of the Super Bowl."

Come this Sunday, somebody must win, and somebody must lose. But when criminal counterfeiters are off the streets and e-streets, everybody wins.

MCC Partners SouthWest Airlines Announces New Non-Stop Destinations!

$

DALLAS—Feb. 3, 2014—Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) today announced the airline will offer new nonstop service to domestic destinations from Dallas Love Field following the repeal of flight restrictions imposed in 1979 limiting the reach of Dallas’ most convenient airport.

Southwest will begin serving five new nonstop destinations on Oct. 13, followed by ten additional new nonstop destinations on Nov. 2. The addition of these 15 new nonstop destinations will bring Southwest to a total of 31 nonstop destinations from Love Field.

“The official repeal of Wright Amendment federal flight restrictions signifies a turning point for the Southwest brand not just in Dallas, but from coast-to-coast,” said Gary Kelly, Southwest Airlines Chairman, President, and CEO. “We are pleased to offer this new service to the Customers of our home airport, who have waited 34 long years, and we thank the many, many folks who made this opportunity a reality. Goodbye, Wright Amendment. Hello, America!”

Beginning Oct. 13, 2014, Southwest Airlines will launch nonstop service from Dallas Love Field to:

 Baltimore/Washington (BWI)

 Denver

 Las Vegas

 Orlando

 Chicago Midway

Beginning Nov. 2, 2014, Southwest Airlines will launch nonstop service from Dallas Love Field to:

 Atlanta

 Nashville

 Washington, D.C. (Reagan National)

 Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood

 Los Angeles (LAX)

 New York (LaGuardia)

 Phoenix

 San Diego

 Orange County/Santa Ana

 Tampa

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and former U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison today joined Kelly and Southwest Employees at a news conference to celebrate the momentous occasion.

The Wright Amendment, and its subsequent revisions, limit Southwest Airlines’ current nonstop all jet service from Dallas Love Field to nine states including Texas. The repeal of the federal law rewrites the map by allowing Southwest to potentially serve an additional 41 states and the District of Columbia (Reagan National airport) from Love Field.

In May, the airline will announce the specific flight schedules and fares for the sale of the new service, giving Southwest’s Customers the first opportunity to book these flights via southwest.com.

MCC Bronze Partner AT&T Statement: A Time for Pride and Equality

$
0
0
On Friday night, many of us will be tuned in to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games opening ceremony.

It’s an event that symbolizes peace and unity amongst nations. It’s also a moment for us to express our pride in America and everything for which it stands.

AT&T has stood proudly with Team USA at every Olympic opening ceremony since 1984 in Los Angeles. As a Proud Partner of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Team for the past 30 years, we’ve showcased American athletes and celebrated their diversity all around the world. For these games, we’re shining a light on some of the hard work and dedication that goes into training for the Olympics, and asking fans to showcase their American pride by uploading U-S-A chants through our free #ItsOurTime app.

The Olympic Games in Sochi also allow us to shine a light on a subject that’s important to all Americans: equality. As you may know, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community around the world is protesting a Russian anti-LGBT law that bans “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations.” To raise awareness of the issue, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has called on International Olympic Committee (IOC) sponsors to take action and stand up for LGBT equality.

AT&T is not an IOC sponsor, so we did not receive the HRC request. However, we are a long-standing sponsor of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), we support HRC’s principles and we stand against Russia’s anti-LGBT law.

AT&T has a long and proud history of support for the LGBT community in the United States and everywhere around the world where we do business. We support LGBT equality globally and we condemn violence, discrimination and harassment targeted against LGBT individuals everywhere. Russia’s law is harmful to LGBT individuals and families, and it’s harmful to a diverse society.

We celebrate the diversity of all Olympic athletes, their fans, Russian residents and all people the world over – including and, especially, our employees and their loved ones.

As the games begin, we’re here to support and inspire American athletes who’ve worked hard and sacrificed much to achieve their dreams. We also want to be on record with our support for the LGBT community, and we hope that others involved with the Olympic Games will do the same.

Go Team USA! #ItsOurTime.-

Five Borough Chamber Coalition Testifies at NYC Council on Paid Sick Bill, Intro #1

$
0
0
On Friday Feb. 14th, Nancy Ploeger testified at the Council hearing on Friday regarding the Council's new amended paid sick leave bill extending requirements to all businesses with 5 or more employees.  She was representing 5 Borough Chamber of Commerce Coalition created four years ago to be the voice of small businesses in our city.

The Coalition created a panel to testify as to the burdens of this bill and unintended consequences.  Others on the panel included Victor Wong, The Partnership for New York City, Rob Bookman, the NYC Hospitality Alliance, Zulay Mateo, the Bodega Association USA, and Zulema Wiscovitch, the National Supermarket Association.

The main point of the bill is now extending it to affect all businesses with 5 or more employees, mandating businesses to pay 5 paid sick days.

All of us testified as to the fact that this new bill was issued without discussion, after we had spent over 4 years at the table fighting for a balanced piece of legislation and negotiating the current bill which affects employers with over 20 employees with a phase in for those with 15+ employees in six months. In addition points were made regarding the Council's wish to enact this effective April 1 without rules even being written as yet, without spelling out the consequences if a business should not be in compliance and even without staff at the DCA in place yet to handle this.

In addition, we asked that the implementation be pushed back at least 9 months (the length of time businesses had to get ready for compliance for the current bill).  Council and the administration want this to go in effect in less than 48 days.

Please find both our testimony and press release posted on our website.

If you would like more information on the issue and/or would be willing to tell us your story and how this will affect your business, please send an email to info@manhattancc.org
