Title: NY State of Health: What Does it Mean for Small Business Owners?

NY State of Health, The Official Health Plan Marketplace is where small businesses will shop for, compare and enroll in health insurance coverage through the Small Business Marketplace. Small businesses with 50 or fewer eligible employees will be able to participate in the Marketplace.

Choices for You and Your Employees.

Providing you and your workforce with affordable, robust choices for health insurance coverage that is easy to administer is the Small Business Marketplace’s mission. The Marketplace will provide a selection of health plans at a range of price points.

As an employer, you will be able to determine the level of choice for your employees. You can decide to offer one plan; multiple plans by health insurance carrier or coverage level; or allow employees to select from all Small Business Marketplace health plans available in the county in which they live or work. If you choose to contribute to your employees’ coverage, you will set your contribution level. There is no minimum contribution and no minimum participation requirement.

You can choose an effective date as early as January 1, 2014 or you can choose an effective date the first of any month thereafter to best meet your needs. Enrollment begins on October 1, 2013.

Get Answers to Your Questions

Brokers, agents, navigators and other in-person assistors who are trained and certified by the Marketplace will be there to guide you and your employees through the enrollment process. Customer support will be available in person, online and via phone. Assistance will be available in multiple languages.

Administrative Simplicity

Since choice is a hallmark of the Small Business Marketplace, your employees may select a variety of health plans. To make it easier for you, the Marketplace will compile premiums for your employees and send you one monthly bill. You will pay the total amount due to the Marketplace and we will handle payments to the health plans. One account to set up, online enrollment for you and your employees, and just one bill to pay. It’s that easy.

Tax Benefits for Your Business.

If you offer your employees health coverage through the Small Business Marketplace, you may be able to use the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit. As of 2014, NY State of Health is the only place you will be able to access this tax credit. You may qualify for a tax credit of up to 50% (up to 35% for non-profits) of eligible premium expenses to offset the cost of insurance for you and your employees.

Ways to Get Ready:

There are things you can do now to make sure your business is ready to take advantage of all the Small Business Marketplace will have to offer:

1. Think about how your current plan works for you and your employees.
2. If you don’t offer health coverage to your workforce, consider what benefits you’d like to provide. Also consider the amount you may be willing to contribute toward a health plan.
3. Talk with an insurance broker about how they can help you make the best choices for you and your employees.
4. Ask your tax advisor if your business may qualify for the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit.

How Can MCC Benefit NYC Young Professionals?

$
0
0
MCC seeks to develop the next generation of business owners and professionals in NYC by providing educational and networking opportunities in a relaxed atmosphere. On October 15th, MCC hosted its Young Professionals Launch Event at Pioneers Bar in Chelsea. Here’s how one MCC member attended a MCC Young Professionals event and made great contacts (as told to MCC Program Director Anna Strindberg):

Anna,

Thank you for hosting last night’s event. It was the first time I’d ever been to a networking event, and I really enjoyed it! My expectations were quite a bit different from the reality, which was good. I thought it might be a little more anxiety-producing than it was, but in actuality, it was very relaxed, and I met a great deal of interesting and beneficial people.

I manage the Professional English Programs at a private school in midtown (Rennert NYC), so meeting some professionals from other countries (e.g., Germany, Japan, etc.) and discussing our business helped me to find potential clients (i.e., students), who can come learn professional, business English with us.

In addition, I found some potential placements for our volunteer students, who want to get immersed in American business culture and use their English skills.

The event was beneficial and relaxed, and I appreciate your hard work and effort. I’m looking forward to joining future events!
Best,

Phillip Thompson

MTV teamed with volunteer platform Catchafire to put creative and social firepower behind a worthwhile, "tough sell" cause--the Center for Employment Opportunities, which offers comprehensive job services to people leaving prison.

“We have a very tough product to sell.” That’s Mindy Tarlow, the CEO of Center for Employment Opportunities. You can’t tell by the name of the organization, but that “tough product” is people--men and women recently released from prison. The New York-based nonprofit specializes in helping them transition into the work force and stay employed.

NYC's New Business Acceleration Team Aids Union Square Hospitality Group in Opening Restaurants & Understanding the Rules!

Below is a testimony and thank you from the Union Sq. Hosp. Group as to how NBAT helped them open restaurants and understand rules and compliance. Great stuff! See the following link for more info: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nbat/html/home/home.shtml

Dear Stephen,
Here are some of the many benefits we’ve enjoyed as a result of NBAT’s efforts:

*Clarity on next steps for permit application, job approval, and sign-off
*Clarity on the impact that one permit has on the next (e.g. DOB approval of equipment not on MEP list, which then leads to FDNY approval of placement, which in turn leads to FDNY suppression test and approval)
*A “no permit left behind” mentality that had our client manager, Elizabeth Gelpi, making sure all that we were aligned in our applications
*Helpful, friendly inspectors!
*We were treated like what we were doing (two full restaurant build-outs) was positive for the City (which we like to think it is, and if you’ve dined at North End Grill or Blue Smoke Battery Park City lately, I think “positive” makes the grade!) rather than trying to pull one over on the City
*Our contractors were treated with respect
*There were no screaming matches as there have been on job sites in the past
*Inspectors took their time and demystified their decision-making process
*“One-stop shopping” for all queries and concerns
*We never heard “that’s not my job; go ask another agency”
*An honoring, philosophical shift and the dignity that comes from being treated as a “client” (NBAT’s excellent term) by each inspecting agency.

Many thanks for all your team's help & all the best,
Austin

Talking Transition

$
0
0
For the first time in 12 years, New Yorkers have a new mayor. So we’re getting together and we’re Talking Transition.

Talking Transition is an open conversation about the future of New York City. We're transforming the typically closed-door transition process between Election Day and the Inauguration into an opportunity for New Yorkers to make their voices heard.

Join us November 9th through the 23rd in a conversation that will spread across the city – from an open tent filled with transition-related events on Canal Street opening this Saturday, to mobile “tents” that will setup in public spaces throughout the boroughs, to our online forum, talkingtransitionnyc.com. As may be seen even from initial press, the project promises to cause a stir.

I’ll be there, in the tent, this weekend and hope you will join me. You can find the schedule of events at talkingtransitionnyc.com. Please encourage your colleagues and members to join in the conversation too. Together we can demonstrate that an “open transition” is the best way forward for New York City.

We’ll be sending details about MCC’s event soon.

Campaign focusing on supporting businesses in the 2nd Ave. subway construction zone

Small Business Saturday, which falls between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is back on 2nd Avenue in the subway construction zone!

“We know that small businesses are the building blocks that create the identity of a neighborhood and this is a day to support the local heroes that create jobs, boost the economy and preserve neighborhoods around the country. American Express created Small Business Saturday in 2010 in response to small business owners’ most pressing need: more demand for their products and services,” states MCC President Ploeger. “We continue to promote the merchants and restaurants along the 2nd Ave. corridor and Small Business Saturday is another great way to bring new and returning customers to these stores.”

Businesses, such as The Comic Strip Live, Marianne Vera Salon, Next Cleaners, Eneslow Shoes & Pedorthics, New York Paint & Hardware and Leonards’ Market, are participating so far and many more are expected to sign up this week! Starting Monday November 25th, MCC is handing out Small Business Saturday tote bags, balloons, bumper magnets and welcome mats to merchants and promoting the day to MCC members and subscribers as well as upper east siders through social media outreach, through emails and on the MCC website.

We hope consumers will join the forces of over 100 million Small Business Saturday shoppers this November 30th!

Make sure to Shop Local on 2nd Avenue or in your own neighborhood and be a part of Small Business Saturday!
